Whooooosh…

Today we (Rochester & Associates Ltd) had multi hardware failures :(

Tor’s PC finally gave up the ghost, but I managed to cobble together a new PC from the odds ‘n’ sods i have laying around the office.
Spending all bloody night rebiulding the software on it though :hehe:

My soundcard decided to create sounds akin to a bowl of Rice Crispies – Quick reinstall required. :plain:

A client needed some data tranferring onto a ‘better’ PC but was too busy once I managed to get there.
My fault really, as i had to get Tor’s PC into a workable position before leaving :(

Tor had to go across to another client in town to install some replacement memory, but the PC wouldn’t boot once she installed it :(
I quickly donned my blue suit and cape. Put my red ‘Y’ fronts over my fresh blue Spandex tights and…

WHOOOOOSH…

Flew across town to save the day.

I managed it too!! ;)

Bank Holiday weekend – HOORAY!!

Simple Miracles Made Easy!

Yesterday I managed to perform a feat of near impossibility (apparently ;) )!

Went to install the new PC for the client with the failed hard drive – nooooo problem.
PC installs and configures perfectly – Still noooo problem.
I was told by the client, who had verified this with the software vendor AND another PC ‘professional’ that the software installed on said PC “WOULD NOT!” install on another PC.
*ponders*

The software is over £1,000 to buy…
*ponders again*

Gets disks and attempts to load
message: this software has already been installed… etc etc
*ponders yet again – slowly a sly smile creeps across face*

;) Attempts something devious… ;)
SUCCESS
:D Software loaded perfectly :D

I got a hug from the client

Saved the client mundo cash – very happy client too!

Now if only I could perfect the water and wine trick…

Surprised – but not!

Today I went to reinstall Windows onto a new Hard Drive only to be told that the client decided that they wanted a new PC – GOOD !! The PC was quite old and needed replacement, I was quite surprised when they asked me to fix it. :)

BT in their infinite wisdom decided that today they would cause a power outage at the main Manchester Data Centre – Causing untold numbers of ADSL clients to completely lose service all day.

Oh how I love BT
They never fail to disappoint ;)

On a sad note – the little fishy (named Dash) was introduced to the main tank on Sunday – now he’s missing, presumed eaten :( :(

Disappointed

Dispite my best efforts I failed to update this Blog with the regularity I promised myself :(
Oh dear…

Still – thought I’d get an early one in!! ;)

The week this time was another mixed bag –
*Install Remote file option to backup a remote server :)
*Discover Sony have disabled the drag ‘n’ drop facility in Windows Xp to create a DVD :(
*Meet a client who is really being ripped off BIGTIME – server quoted at over £10,000 for 5 PCs and 3 Macs?? Makes me sick – grrrrrr
*Big long drive over to Lythem for a Vaio install :)
*Goosed hard drive and work around for the above DVD issue today :plain:

Pretty varied life I lead :D

‘m off now

Simon

Weird problems

Had a busy day today.
The morning was spent with a client wanting a simple PC install and backup of the MD’s emails.
Off to the install – couldn’t get the IP address range for the PC – ages spent contacting the relevent parties.
Finally got it and left for the head office 5 minutes later.
Backup the MD’s mail – first had to clean lots of spyware and install the PST backup add-in to Outlook.
Cleaning and installing and backing up type tasks later – PST too big to fit to the CD-RW :(
Simon is now behind on his schedule again – nothing unusual there then ;)

I snook into the office for some buttiness – 3rd time I manage lunch this month :)

Off to this afternoons fun…

Meet a client at an office – sign off the order for his new kit – A new startup business – we like! :)
Quick fix for the backup – the backup software couldn’t backup its own database

Then the most weird problem I have EVER seen:
2 network points on a wall (points 4 & 21)
Connecting to a patch panel, then into a switch. Easy…
Cables test ok using a stoopidly expensive tester. Tested ok.
Connect PC to port 4 – sloooooow connection (very low ping times) :(
Connect PC to port 21 – intermittent connection :(
Swap ports on switch with a known good – 4 slow, 21 nada :(
SWap patch leads for a known good – 4 slow, 21 nada :(
Connect PC direct into switch – all good :)

Problem with cables between wall and patch panel? Tested the tester on a known fault – T Ok :)
retest cables – fine – odd???

Here’s the really odd part – plug a line splitter into port 4 – 2 ports now down the cable from port 4, into the switch.
spilt again at the patch panel and connect both ends to the switch.
Connect PC to one of the split lines.
The PC connects perfectly and runs at a normal speed – ??????
Weird!!!
