End of the month

This month has ended already?
Feels like it was only about a week long!
Guess that’s what happens when you get old :(

Today was mainly about stupd programming problems.
In the morning I spent forever trying to get a new theme for WordPress working (amongst the usual workaday stuff)
In the afternoon I spent ages trying to get a ‘Contact us’ page, to email one of my clients – with a little success :)

Brain fried now though :!:

You lying BT!

#RANT#
OK, it’s official!
I HATE BT!!!!
Their engineer had the cheek to lie – straight faced – to my client today.
After visiting the client – doing some checks and “everything tested out OK”, he popped down to the local Exchange to “Check something”.
When he got back he had “Changed a card”.
Apparently, when BT hardware in the Exchange fails, it is the responsibility of the ISP!
This REALLY pi**es me off.
#/RANT OVER#

Breathe out – Breathe in – count to 10, slowly
Ah, peace descends…

Wan*ers!

Genetic Discrimination?

So I read a recent news post:
Senate Passes Genetic Discrimination Bill
The frightening thing for me came at the bottom of the article:

Bill sponsors said that has increased the likelihood that a prospective health insurance company or employer will reject a person because of concerns that person will suffer a costly disease in the future.

What??
An employer might refuse a candidate ‘cos he/she is potentially predisposed to a “costly disease”??
At which point did the 21st century become something from an Orwellian novel?
The simple fact that the U.S. Senate fees that it has to legislate to stop this happening, tells me that it ALREADY happening.

I’d better warn my potential children to stay off the harmful genomes, and aways choose the healthy chromosome!

Am I the only one who finds all this a little frightening?

I just had to post this – ultra geeky pants How long until Christmas???

Not again!

And just for fun – on the day that my client pays his 50+ staff members via web banking – BT decide to stop my client from accessing the Internet
My client is now facing a £12 per person bill for using the CHAPS system to pay his employees.
You do the maths!
And is there anything my client can do? NO!!!
In a small business, a £500+ bill for something not of your doing is a bitter pill to swallow – to say the least!

I also heard a shocking tale from a client this morning…

He decided to get Sky HD installed at his home. Nothing wrong so far…
Installation went fine right up to the testing point, during which my client noticed that the sound was a little too loud.
Thinking this was a usual thing – testing the sound maybe? – he was fairly happy, and the installer went on his happy way.
My client then discovered why the sound was set so high – the Sky HD box had a constant buzzing sound which was masked by the volume he was testing it at! Knowing this, the engineer packed up and left rapidly!!
A brief conversation with the Sky people ensued and an engineer is visiting ‘soon’ to rectify the issue.

Typical service from a large company

Confidence

There have been a few times in this technical existence, that I have provided services that the client didn’t really need – such was the case today…

Let me explain – My client (Hi Jaimie) moved office on Friday; today being the first official day in the new place.
With this in mind, I was called to pop over for an hour or so, just to help things go smoothly and to give them a little confidence.
Sometimes I miss the intangible benefits of what we do – that is to say, the bits that a client actually gets from having a techie in. On the face of it, I really did very little, but the value to the client was quite high (I think ;) )

:D I’d better say Hi to the VOIP guy too!!

Whilst there, we were discussing Blogs and the timings of some of my postings were raised, as was the content – nothing like having a reputation ;)

In the afternoon, I had a client pop in the office with their desktop PC which was showing a very dramatic “THERMAL ERROR” – scary!
As it turns out, the ventilation ducts over the processor were filled with dust! A quick air duster blast and all was working again. We also replaced her Anti-Virus software and did a system clean up (the kids use this machine for their music). Not bad value for money when we were at it for about an hour. :D

Wow!! It appears to be getting late again – Sleepy time (I’m freezing cold – time to snuggle  )
